The HOPE Grant¹ is not a loan, up to $5,000 in extra funds. The best part? Since it’s a grant and not a loan, it never has to be paid back.

Home for the Holidays — Meet the Millers
How has the definition of home evolved for your family over the last 6 months?
Before we had the house, we only saw it from the outside—bricks, doors, bathrooms and square feet. But once we were inside the home it was the spaces that we never looked at twice that became the most important parts of the house—the staircase, the furnace that keeps us warm, the kitchen window where Naomie’s siblings watched their first snowfall.
Our new home has made room for all of us; it’s surprised us with its accommodation. There are six of us living here, sometimes seven. Even then, everyone has their favorite place. The girls study in the dining room while Emanuel lifts weights in the basement and we watch a movie with Em. The house has taken us—two people coming from different backgrounds, speaking two different languages—and helped us create a home for our family.
What traditions have you built together in your home?
This house has been full of firsts for us. Naomie’s siblings saw their first snowfall here, from the kitchen window. We dressed for Halloween and went trick or treating for the first time. We had our first Thanksgiving and our first Hanukkah. We just started a combined season, we celebrate everything. In one room we are lighting the menorah, and in the next room we are stringing Christmas lights and hanging ornaments. The house has made room for all of our celebrations.
Our first Thanksgiving in the home was really special. We sat together at the table and said what we were most grateful for. And by the time it was my turn to speak I knew exactly what I was going to say—I was grateful to Better Mortgage for giving us this home to live in.
Naomie’s greatest joy comes from cooking with her sisters and her favorite tradition is ‘English supper,” when no one is allowed to speak Creole. The girls and Emmanuel have to share the details of their day in English.
What are you looking forward to about the holidays this year?
When it comes to the holidays, we are looking forward to the simple things—waking up on Christmas morning, watching Saturday morning movies, and sitting down to dinner together.
